This year
Deutsche Bank was the main sponsor of the Frieze
Art Fair, held in London in October, for the fourth time. The fair is
not only an exciting event for galleries, collectors, experts, and
sponsors. The number of visitors and the sales volume have increased year
by year. In 2007, 68,000 people streamed into the tents in Regents Park –
a new record. The bank was represented again with numerous offers. In
addition to the traditional VIP Lounge and the Education Space, which
Deutsche Bank supported for the second time this year, the bank also
backed an art project at the Frieze Art Fair.

For A
Delicious Feeling of Confidence, the Frankfurter
Kunstverein had the Slovenian newcomer Tobias
Putrih design a special stage for the fair. On every day of the fair,
it was the site of performances, films, and artist actions by
international participants conjuring the rebellious spirit of stand-up
comedy. Whether the Spanish artist Dora
Garcia had an actor recite texts by the legendary comic Lenny
Bruce, the group Ride 1 from
Sweden put on an absurd séance performance, or the German artist Claus
Richter staged the story of the first human cannonball, Rossa Matilda
Richter, as a discursive muppet show
– A Delicious Feeling of Confidence showed how artists use
humor as a political strategy.

Again in 2007,
the Education Space, sponsored by the bank, attracted many visitors with
the educational program Introducing to the Art World. 300 young
people, including children aged 5 to 12, attended the many art workshops.
The project, conceived in conjunction with the Camden
Arts Center, enables children and young people, school classes and
families to participate in workshops, discussions, and guided tours.
During the four days of the fair, the bank also expanded its corporate
collection by making numerous purchases and furnished visitors with
detailed information about its art activities.

“New
Horizons” was the theme of this year’s exhibition in Deutsche Bank’s VIP
Lounge. In a futuristic industrial ambience, photographic works from the
corporate collection were presented dealing with the theme of horizon in
very different ways. Apart from works by Hiroshi
Sugimoto and the Finnish photographer Jorma
Puranen, the exhibition featured works by two artists acquired last
year for the London collection at the Frieze: Fiona
Tan’s view of a decaying pier in Brighton and Federico
Guzmán’s Tomacco Plant, a critical examination of
the ecological consequences of industrial agriculture.

Once again,
an illustrious mixture of guests from art, culture, business, and politics
assembled in the VIP Lounge. On the opening day, Josef
Ackermann and Pierre
de Weck welcomed U.S. art star Richard
Prince, Springer board member Matthias
Döpfner, architect Zaha Hadid,
and artist Tracey Emin
to the lounge. Other visitors included the New York gallery owner Larry
Gagosian, photo artist Andreas
Gursky, and the collector Julia
Stoschek. Deutsche Bank counted more than 2,000 art enthusiasts in its
lounge during the fair.
